American actress and comedian Caryn Elaine Johnson, widely known as Whoopi Goldberg, surprised many of her fans by revealing she hasn’t worn a bra in nearly five decades. The 69-year-old made the revelation during a recent episode of The View on ABC.
Goldberg explained that she stopped wearing bras back in the 1970s when she was in her twenties, simply because she finds them uncomfortable. “I don’t wear one. I haven’t worn a bra in 50 years. It’s too uncomfortable, and I don’t care if they hit the floor—they’re mine!” she said confidently.
The topic arose during a casual conversation among her co-hosts about the best way to wear bras. Joy Behar, 82, jokingly said she felt like unfastening hers due to discomfort, prompting a light-hearted exchange. Behar noted, “She doesn’t wear one, she liberated those girls a long time ago,” referring to Goldberg—who readily agreed.
Goldberg even stood up and joked about it, saying, “This is what you do. You’re walking and then you go, ‘Hey girl,’” pretending to kick something off the ground as she glanced at her chest.
Aside from her candid humor, Goldberg made headlines earlier this month with her appearance at the Met Gala in New York on May 5. Dressed in a custom Thom Browne outfit, she paid tribute to the exhibit’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.
In a more personal disclosure last year, as reported by Daily Mail, Goldberg opened up about her past struggles with drug addiction in her memoir Bits And Pieces: My Mother, My Brother, And Me. She shared how she battled cocaine addiction in the 1980s and spoke about her earlier experiences with heroin in the 1970s. The book also touches on her mother Emma’s two-year stay in a psychiatric hospital.
