Mikel Arteta has pledged to end Arsenal’s five-year wait for a trophy following their 1-0 victory over Newcastle, which confirmed their spot in next season’s Champions League.
Declan Rice’s brilliant goal from the edge of the box in the second half broke Arsenal’s five-game winless streak and guaranteed a top-five Premier League finish.
Despite potentially securing second place for a third consecutive season, many fans and observers feel the campaign fell short of expectations.
While Liverpool cruised to the league title, Arsenal failed to mount a serious challenge and also fell short in the semi-finals of both the Champions League and the League Cup. Arteta’s only success at Arsenal remains the FA Cup win in 2020, and the club’s league title drought has now extended to 21 years.
Speaking to supporters at the Emirates Stadium after the match, Arteta said:
“We had hoped to be lifting major trophies by now, but due to various circumstances, we couldn’t achieve that. However, we can’t let go of that dream—we need to pursue it with energy and optimism next season.
We’re building our own legacy at this stadium. There’s more to come, but it will require hard work and unity. This team is hungry, talented, and determined—we will make it happen.”
Captain Martin Ødegaard echoed Arteta’s sentiments, saying:
“We can be proud of our Champions League journey, but in the league, we weren’t good enough. We have to learn from all the ups and downs, come back stronger, and win silverware for this club.”
Newcastle’s Champions League Hopes Still Alive
Newcastle controlled much of the first half but were unable to convert their chances, especially with top scorer Alexander Isak missing due to a groin issue.
Manager Eddie Howe said it’s uncertain whether Isak will be fit for their crucial final game against Everton on May 25:
“He felt pain after training and went for a precautionary scan. We’ll have to monitor his recovery over the next few days.”
Currently in third place, Newcastle are level on points with Chelsea and Aston Villa but have the edge on goal difference.
“We’re still in a good position,” said Howe. “The focus now is on preparing well for next weekend. The stakes are high, and everyone is battling for that Champions League spot. It’ll come down to one last big push.”
