Siaya: Man Detained with Teargas Canister in Alleged Attempt to Disrupt ODM Elections

Police in Nyakach Constituency, Siaya County, have arrested a man armed with crude weapons and a teargas canister after foiling an attempt to disrupt the ongoing Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party elections at Kodingo Chief’s Camp. Four accomplices managed to escape after being confronted by members of the public who had gathered for the event.

The arrested suspect, carrying the teargas canister, was subdued by the crowd and beaten before police officers, who were on patrol, intervened and took him to the hospital. According to party supporters, the suspect was part of a group of five youths who stormed the camp, where the election for sub-county officials was taking place.

Authorities recovered the teargas canister, machetes, and knives from the suspect and his fleeing accomplices, who narrowly escaped after being beaten.

Upon questioning, the suspect revealed that he and his group had come from the neighboring Nyando constituency and were allegedly hired by a politician to disrupt the election.
