“Devastating Loss: Esther Musila Grieves the Passing of Her Late ‘Son’

Musila took to her social media to honor him with an emotional tribute:

“To a son I cherished as my own, this loss is heartbreaking! It’s barely been a year since we laid your parents to rest 😢. Just two days ago, we spoke, and I was so excited about your plans to enroll in university. I was looking forward to watching you pursue your dream of becoming a scientist… and now, just two days later, you’re gone. You and Glenn K. Naibei have been inseparable since Class 1. From the two of you, I learned what it truly means to have your brother’s back—through thick and thin.”

While Musila didn’t specify the cause of Malakwen’s passing, she suggested his death was painful and possibly preventable:

“You didn’t deserve to die this way. I’m angry! Some of us failed you! Rest in eternal peace, my child, as you reunite with your parents—whom you took care of so selflessly in their final days. I believe they saw your suffering and called you home. Sleep well, Malakwen. Rest in peace 😢.”

Meanwhile, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) successfully demolished an 11-story building in Mombasa on Wednesday, ending concerns over potential disaster due to the building’s compromised structure from an unapproved borehole drilling.

The building, located off Abdel Nasser Road, was brought down with explosives at exactly 12:56 pm under the supervision of KDF.

No casualties were reported, and nearby buildings remained unaffected as the structure collapsed into a pile of rubble.

Once the area was declared safe, the officers celebrated atop the debris, singing in unison and clapping in appreciation of a job well done. “Igonge, igonge, aah igonge!…kaskia raha kaskia raha,” they sang joyfully.

On Tuesday, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir explained that the building had suffered severe foundational damage from unauthorized borehole drilling. He said the decision to demolish it was made after the ground-floor columns had sunk by approximately three meters.

“The building has been declared structurally unsound and poses an imminent risk to life and property. A controlled demolition was necessary to prevent catastrophe,” Nassir stated. The demolition was carried out with assistance from the County Department of Lands, Urban Planning and Housing, the National Building Inspectorate, the County Security Team, the National Construction Authority, the State Department of Public Works, and the County Disaster Response Team.

A 1.2-kilometer evacuation zone was enforced around the site, including evacuating patients from the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital, who were relocated to Utange and Port Reitz hospitals.

The evacuation radius covered areas from Digo Road to Hospital Road, Jomo Kenyatta Road to Mwembe Tayari to Kava Shibu Road, Faza Road to Kisauni Road, Tononoka Road to Muslim Road, Tana Street to Wajir Road, and up to Solomon Castle Hotel and Ronald Ngala Road.

The military engineers led the operation after hours of preparation. Explosives were strategically placed within the building’s pillars to ensure an inward collapse upon detonation. Ambulances and firefighters were on standby throughout the multi-agency operation.

As a precaution, Nyali Bridge, a major traffic route, was closed to all vehicles before the demolition.
