CHAN Organisers Announce Fresh Safety Guidelines for Upcoming Games

Kenyan supporters planning to watch the Harambee Stars face Zambia in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday have been urged to arrive at Kasarani Stadium at least five hours before kick-off, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) announced on Tuesday, August 12.

Fans are advised to have their e-tickets ready on their mobile phones for swift verification and to purchase tickets only from the authorised online vendor, as printed tickets will not be accepted.

The directive follows crowd trouble on Sunday, August 10, when some spectators entered without valid tickets, causing damage to the recently renovated Moi International Sports Centre. As a result, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has capped attendance at 27,000—60% of the stadium’s capacity—and reinforced that entry will be strictly for e-ticket holders. CAF has also instructed the LOC and government to launch a public awareness campaign on safety and access rules, warning that further breaches could see matches moved to alternative venues.

LOC chair Nicholas Musonye emphasised the importance of adhering to security guidelines and cooperating with event officials to ensure the tournament’s smooth running.

Additionally, the committee revealed plans for “Official Fan Zones” where supporters can watch the final group match against Zambia on Sunday, August 17, with full details to be announced soon. The LOC called on fans to help protect Kenya’s reputation as a host for major football events.
