Tensions Flare at Eldoret National Polytechnic After Student’s Murder Sparks Protests
Students at Eldoret National Polytechnic staged protests on Monday following the brutal killing of a fellow student who was stabbed to death by unknown assailants on Sunday night.
The 19-year-old victim was attacked around 8 p.m. while walking from campus to his rented accommodation in the Cherunya area, approximately two kilometers from the institution. The area, home to many off-campus student hostels, has become a growing concern due to ongoing safety issues.
Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed that the student died on the spot, adding that the attackers are suspected to have stolen some of his belongings.
“We are investigating the matter thoroughly and are committed to bringing those responsible to justice,” Mwanthi said. “We ask students to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed.”
Angered by the incident, students took to the streets, blocking part of the Eldoret-Kisumu road and demanding stronger security measures.
Anti-riot police were deployed to de-escalate the situation, and senior officers engaged with the students in an effort to restore calm.
Eldoret National Polytechnic Principal Dr. Charles Koech met with student leaders and security officials, urging the student body to remain peaceful while the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) continues its probe.
“We understand your grief and frustration. The case is under active investigation, and we ask for your patience as authorities carry out their work,” Dr. Koech said.
Student leader Javin Oyoo expressed deep concern, noting that the murder is just the latest in a series of violent incidents affecting students.
“Most of us live outside campus, and safety has become a serious issue. We need proper security measures in place to protect students,” Oyoo said.
