Gachagua: I’m Not Plotting to Overthrow Ruto — We’ll Vote Him Out in 2027.

Rigathi Gachagua Denies Plot to Overthrow Government, Slams Human Rights Violations

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has firmly dismissed claims by President William Ruto’s allies that he is attempting to unseat the government through unconstitutional means.

The accusations emerged after President Ruto, speaking on July 9, issued a stern warning to individuals allegedly plotting to remove him from office by force.

“I want to tell those characters giving us lectures that if they think they can change this administration through violence and unlawful means before 2027, let them try,” said a visibly angry Ruto. His allies have since accused Gachagua of masterminding a coup through the coordination of anti-government protests.

However, Gachagua, currently on a tour of the United States, refuted the allegations, stating that any change in leadership must come through the ballot box during the 2027 general elections.

“Nobody wants to change the government unconstitutionally. No one is trying to overthrow the administration — that is not necessary. We believe in change through the ballot on August 10, 2027,” said Gachagua.

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader also condemned what he termed gross violations of human rights, citing recent controversial directives allegedly issued by top government officials.

“But the worst of all is the gross violation of human rights. That’s where nobody can believe it,” he said, referencing President Ruto’s “shoot them on the leg” order, along with Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and Belgut MP Nelson Koech’s reported “shoot to kill” commands — statements that have sparked public outrage.

Gachagua further alleged that a notorious 1990s gang leader, previously entangled in legal battles, had recent criminal charges dropped as a form of reward for helping suppress the protests.

“He had a criminal case in Makadara. It was withdrawn to ‘thank him’ for a job ‘well done,’” Gachagua claimed.

The former DP also reiterated his support for the growing “Wantam” (one-term) movement — a political push aimed at denying the Kenya Kwanza administration a second term.

“Kenyans have made up their minds — not just Mt. Kenya residents. Across the country, 90% of people are ready. It’s one term,” Gachagua stated.

He also dismissed calls for dialogue by Azimio leader Raila Odinga, claiming the veteran opposition figure had been co-opted to derail the Wantam movement.

“I heard Raila Odinga calling for a national dialogue, a conclave. That old man has been sent by Ruto to create a diversion and slow down the momentum,” Gachagua said, accusing Odinga of repeatedly engaging in talks that have failed to bring tangible outcomes.

Responding to Odinga’s remarks suggesting that “Riggy G is not the solution,” Gachagua agreed — but said the real solution lies in ensuring Kenya Kwanza serves only one term.

“I’ve never said I’m the solution. I am not. The solution is one — one term. And you can’t stop it; it’s unstoppable now,” he asserted.

While speaking in Seattle, Gachagua encouraged Kenyans in the diaspora to continue sending remittances to support the country’s economy.

“Our number one foreign exchange earner is diaspora remittances. You are critical partners in Kenya’s economic development,” he said.
