Three young children lost their lives after a pit latrine collapsed at Queen of Angels Academy in Turbo, Uasin Gishu County, where they had gone for school registration.
Grief engulfed the area as families received news of the heartbreaking incident. Emergency responders managed to recover the bodies of the three ECDE pupils, while one child remains missing.
The collapse has been linked to heavy rains, which reportedly weakened the toilet’s structure.
Turbo Deputy County Commissioner Charles Cheseto confirmed the latrine caved in early Thursday morning following an overnight downpour.

“That latrine was properly constructed, but the heavy rainfall led to its collapse,” he said.
Angry community members and parents are now calling for accountability and improved infrastructure to prevent such tragedies.
Some parents blamed poor construction and negligence.
“We have become greedy builders who only deceive,” lamented Josephat Ayora, a parent.
Another parent, Mercy Chero, expressed concern, noting, “Even teachers were using the same toilets meant for the young learners.”
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary in Eldoret as investigations continue.
