Police report 11 deaths and 567 arrests following Saba Saba protests.

The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed 11 deaths resulting from the violent Saba Saba demonstrations that erupted nationwide on Monday.

In a statement, police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga revealed that 52 police officers and 11 civilians sustained injuries during the protests, with 567 people arrested across the country.

Additionally, 12 police vehicles, three government cars, and four privately-owned vehicles were damaged.

While applauding citizens who observed peace and followed the law, NPS noted that certain groups deliberately resorted to criminal activities, including attacking police officers and looting.

The police indicated that all reported cases would undergo further investigation.

NPS also praised its officers for maintaining “remarkable restraint and professionalism” throughout the unrest.

The demonstrations commemorated the 35th anniversary of Kenya’s Saba Saba pro-democracy movement, disrupting normal life in various areas.

Key roads and major access routes, especially within Nairobi, were barricaded by police, limiting travel and access to essential services.

Many businesses across several counties shut down due to concerns about looting, with looting incidents confirmed in at least six counties.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen stated that those responsible for Monday’s chaos would face legal action, just as others involved in previous violent protests had.

He commended the police for their “commendable and essential” efforts to ensure public safety.

Meanwhile, by 6:30 p.m., the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) had reported 10 deaths, 29 injuries, two cases of abduction, and 37 arrests across 17 counties.
