Senior police officers from the Nyanza region on Thursday paid a condolence visit to the family of the late blogger and teacher, Albert Ojwang, at their rural home in Homa Bay County.
This was the first official visit by the police to the family, coming a week after Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja pledged that such a visit would take place.
The delegation was led by Nyanza Regional Police Commander Gisiri Nyamohanga, accompanied by other senior regional security officials.
Ojwang died in police custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station on June 7, just hours after being arrested by DCI officers from his father’s compound in Homa Bay. His death has ignited a wave of national protests, with Kenyans demanding justice and accountability. Several police officers have since been arraigned in connection with the incident.
Commander Nyamohanga and his team visited Mzee Meshack Ojwang’s home in Kakoth Village, Kokwanyo Location, Rachuonyo East Sub-county, where they offered condolences and words of comfort to the grieving family.
“We are here on behalf of the National Police Service to express our condolences and to show that we stand with this family in their pain. Albert’s death has deeply affected many of us, and we assure you that we are committed to seeing justice served,” said Nyamohanga.
The officers also delivered a donation of assorted food items—including rice, flour, sugar, milk, and vegetables—to support the family during the mourning period, recognizing the high number of visitors streaming in daily.
“We understand that many people have been coming to mourn with this family, and we hope this small gesture helps ease the burden of hosting them,” Nyamohanga added.
Homa Bay Police Commander Lawrence Koilem, who was part of the visiting team, emphasized the show of solidarity.
“We brought food items to support the family during this trying time. The regional commander personally contributed 70 percent of the donations,” he noted.
Since news of Albert’s death broke, Mzee Meshack Ojwang has received a steady flow of visitors—relatives, friends, and members of the public—many bringing food supplies in a show of support.
Albert’s mysterious death while in police custody has continued to fuel public outrage, with nationwide calls for justice, transparency, and reforms in law enforcement.
