LSK President Demands Arrest of Second Officer in Nairobi Protest Shooting
Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo has demanded the immediate arrest of a second police officer who was with the colleague caught on camera shooting a face mask vendor in the head during Tuesday’s protests in Nairobi.
The disturbing incident occurred along Moi Avenue, where two anti-riot officers were seen cornering the unarmed vendor, severely beating him before one of them opened fire at close range. The protests were part of a public outcry seeking justice for Albert Ojwang’.
While the National Police Service (NPS) has since announced the arrest of the officer who pulled the trigger, Ms. Odhiambo insists that his fellow officer must also be held accountable for his role in the assault.
“It’s not just the shooter. His colleague was right there, pushing the victim. That makes him an accessory to the crime,” she told Spice FM on Wednesday. “They acted together and must be prosecuted together.”
The LSK president also called on the NPS to reveal the identity of the arrested officer, pointing out that members of the public have already circulated his name and family details online.
“I’m still waiting for an official statement naming the officer. Kenyans online have already identified him and are demanding justice,” she added.
Ms. Odhiambo further urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to issue a statement detailing any action it has taken regarding the incident and the conduct of the implicated officers.
During the protests, which were largely led by young people demanding the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat—who is also linked to the death of Albert Ojwang’—chaos erupted after suspected goons infiltrated the peaceful demonstrations.
According to Health Director-General Patrick Amoth, the shot vendor was taken to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where he underwent emergency neurosurgery.
The incident has provoked widespread outrage across the country, with Kenyans calling for swift and decisive action against police brutality.
