Mohamed Ali Demands Justice, Questions DIG Lagat’s Role in Activist Ojwang’s Death

Nyali MP Mohamed Ali has sharply criticized the decision by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Lagat to step aside following growing public outrage over the death of digital activist and teacher Albert Ojwang.

Ali, a former investigative journalist, dismissed the resignation as insufficient, insisting it does not absolve Lagat from possible responsibility in what he called a “gruesome murder.”

“We acknowledge DIG Lagat’s delayed step aside, but let’s be clear—resigning does not clear him of potential guilt in this horrific act,” Ali stated.

Calling the resignation “the bare minimum” in the pursuit of justice, Ali vowed to keep pushing until all those responsible are held accountable.

“Delaying justice is denying justice. Our determination to expose the truth remains firm. Who ordered the killing of Albert Ojwang?” he asked.

Ali also condemned what he described as attempts by certain police elements to manipulate the facts of the case, emphasizing that “truth always comes to light.”

Autopsy Report Discredits Police Claims

The MP’s comments came shortly after a postmortem report contradicted police claims that Ojwang’s injuries were self-inflicted. Instead, the autopsy revealed that Ojwang died from head injuries, neck compression, and multiple soft tissue injuries—clear signs of torture and murder.

“The narrative doesn’t add up. The lies don’t hold,” Ali asserted.

Ojwang, who had previously criticized DIG Lagat online, was reportedly arrested in Homa Bay and later died in suspicious circumstances at the Nairobi Central Police Station.

Ali’s Seven Key Questions

MP Ali presented seven urgent questions demanding answers, particularly since DIG Lagat was the complainant in the defamation case that led to Ojwang’s arrest:

  1. Why isn’t DIG Lagat a person of interest in the murder of someone who had accused him?
  2. Why was Ojwang transferred to Nairobi instead of being detained locally in Homa Bay?
  3. Why hasn’t Lagat been suspended alongside Nairobi Central officers?
  4. Why was Ojwang isolated in a cell—did he die there, or arrive already dead?
  5. What transpired during his transfer from Homa Bay to Nairobi?
  6. Who were the officers involved in the arrest, and who gave the orders?
  7. Did officers at Central Police Station receive him alive, and where is the CCTV footage?

Calls for Immediate Action

Ali called for the immediate resignation of DIG Lagat, branding him a primary suspect in the case.

“Our youth should not fear for their lives over digital expression. This is not the Kenya we aspire to build,” he declared.

He urged oversight bodies like IPOA and the DCI to ensure justice is both served and seen to be served in this case.

“The time for justice and truth was yesterday. But we demand it today.”
