Andre Onana has fired back at Nemanja Matic after the Lyon midfielder labeled him “one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history.” Onana responded by pointing out Matic’s lack of silverware during his time at Old Trafford, heating up the atmosphere ahead of their Europa League quarter-final showdown.
Lyon, currently fifth in Ligue 1, will host Ruben Amorim’s side in the first leg as they try to salvage what’s been a disappointing season. Speaking after United’s goalless draw with Manchester City, Onana said, “It won’t be easy, but we’re definitely the better team.”
When asked about Onana’s remarks, Matic—normally reserved—didn’t hold back.
“I respect everyone, but if you’re statistically one of United’s worst goalkeepers, you should think before speaking,” said the Serbian international, who previously played for Chelsea. “If De Gea, Schmeichel, or Van der Sar said that, I’d reflect. But in this case, we’ll see.”
Later, Onana responded on social media, throwing shade at Matic’s trophyless stint with United.
“I’d never disrespect another club. We know it’ll be a tough match against a strong opponent,” Onana wrote. “But at least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world—some people can’t say the same.”
United spent £47 million to bring Onana from Inter Milan in 2023 as De Gea’s replacement. He won the FA Cup in his debut season and has recorded nine clean sheets in the Premier League this campaign—only two keepers have more. Still, questions remain due to several high-profile blunders.
Despite his jab at Onana, Matic said he still holds United close to his heart and hopes they bounce back under manager Amorim, his former teammate from Benfica. He praised Amorim’s potential and urged the club to give him time and support.
“Football doesn’t allow much patience nowadays, but I believe Amorim can do great things. Just not starting tomorrow,” he added with a smile.
United’s recent stalemate with City has left them in 13th place, staring at their worst league finish in over three decades. With Champions League qualification via the league unlikely, the Europa League remains their only hope to return to European competition—and avoid further financial strain.
