The Taita Taveta County Government has announced a full waiver on penalties and interest accrued on land rates.
In a public notice released on Wednesday, April 9, Governor Andrew Mwadime stated that the waiver will be in effect until May 30, 2025.
Mwadime encouraged all landowners in arrears to take advantage of the waiver period and settle their land rates before the deadline to avoid reinstatement of the original charges and penalties.
“The County Government of Taita Taveta, under the directive of Governor Dr. Andrew Mwadime-Wakujaa, E.G.H., notifies all land rate defaulters that, in line with Section 5 (1) of the Taita Taveta County Tax Waivers Administration Act 2014, a 100% waiver on interest and penalties for overdue land rates is now active,” the notice stated.
He also provided the official bank details for payment:
Account Name: Taita Taveta County Revenue Collection Account
Account Number: 1140754017
Branch: Wundanyi
Bank: Kenya Commercial Bank
This development follows a contrasting announcement by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who in January 2025 declared an end to land rate waivers in the capital.
Speaking on January 29, Sakaja said the Nairobi County Government would take legal steps, including auctioning properties of land rate defaulters. He revealed that only 50,000 of the city’s 255,000 land parcels had verifiable accounts, leaving over 200,000 plots unaccounted for.
“We gave people time. Last year we offered waivers, but this year there are none,” Sakaja stated firmly.
He added that the county would pursue legal action under the Physical Land Use Planning Act, warning defaulters of possible property auctions, noting this approach has legal precedent.
Sakaja emphasized the importance of revenue collection in supporting key projects such as building schools, upgrading roads, and supplying medicine in hospitals, alongside feeding programs for schoolchildren.
