Kenya Under-20 midfielder Kevin Wangaya is optimistic about the Rising Stars’ chances as they prepare for their debut appearance at the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which will take place from April 26 to May 18 in Cairo, Egypt. Wangaya, a standout player in the team’s camp, believes the squad has made great strides in training and is focused on making the nation proud on the continental stage.
“We know what we want to achieve based on our preparations. We’re asking for prayers and support from our fans as we work hard to uphold the honor of our flag,” Wangaya said.
He added, “Our target is to reach the knockout stages, aim for the semi-finals or finals, and ultimately secure a spot at the World Cup.”
The Rising Stars are currently in a residential camp, fine-tuning their tactics ahead of the tournament, which will feature 13 teams. Head coach Salim Babu is expected to select his final 23-man squad from the current 30 players in camp.
The squad has been bolstered by the arrival of Netherlands-based goalkeeper Caleb Obida Kramer of ADO Den Haag U21 and midfielder Zech Obiero, who plays for English League One side Leyton Orient.
Wangaya praised Obiero’s quick adaptation to the team, especially in building chemistry with his teammates. “He’s a talented player. The only thing we’re refining is his combination play, which we’ve been focusing on during training. Working together has allowed us to guide him on the system, areas for improvement, and how to blend with the team. He’s definitely grown since his arrival,” Wangaya noted.
Obiero has already played in two friendly matches against FKF Premier League sides Kariobangi Sharks and Kenya Police U20, showing glimpses of his talent.
Kenya is placed in a tough Group C alongside defending champions Senegal, Zambia, and Sierra Leone.
Before heading to Cairo, the team will embark on a 10-day training camp in Morocco to sharpen their skills for their historic first AFCON U20 campaign.
The top four teams in the tournament will secure tickets to the 2025 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, set to take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19, 2025.
