Kenya Pays Ksh1.6 Billion to Secure CHAN 2024 Hosting Rights

Kenya is now fully prepared to host the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) after the government paid Ksh1.6 billion to obtain the hosting rights.

This was confirmed by Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya during his appearance before the National Assembly’s Sports Committee. His update came after earlier concerns that Kenya might lose the opportunity due to a delay in payment to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The tournament, scheduled to begin in August 2025, faced uncertainty earlier, but Mvurya assured the Committee during a session at Bunge Towers that the payment demonstrates the government’s dedication to hosting the event.

“The government has fulfilled its financial obligations to CAF to ensure Kenya’s eligibility as host. The Ksh1.6 billion payment was made in accordance with the agreed terms,” Mvurya stated.

The CS emphasized that settling the payment marked a key milestone in preparing for the tournament. He noted that the funds were released by the Treasury to the Sports Ministry, which had been under scrutiny due to the earlier delay.

With this hurdle cleared, Kenya is now moving forward with final preparations to co-host CHAN alongside neighboring countries Uganda and Tanzania.

This progress also strengthens Kenya’s position to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under the Pamoja bid with the same regional partners.

“These events are a significant achievement for Kenya, highlighting our dedication to sporting excellence, infrastructure development, and enhancing our role in African football,” Mvurya told lawmakers.

The CHAN matches will take place at Talanta Sports City and Moi Sports Centre Kasarani in Nairobi, while Nyayo, Ulinzi, and Police Sacco stadiums will serve as training grounds for participating teams.
