EALA MP Falhada Iman Issues Apology for Physical Altercation in Parliament.

EALA MP Falhada Iman Breaks Silence on Scuffle with MP Ummul Kheir

East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Member of Parliament Falhada Iman has spoken out following the circulation of a viral video showing her involved in a physical altercation with nominated MP Ummul Kheir Harun within the Parliament precincts.

In an official statement, Iman expressed deep regret over the incident, acknowledging that her conduct fell short of the standards expected from a public servant.

“I feel compelled to address the regrettable incident that took place in the corridors of Parliament involving myself and nominated MP Ummul Kheir,” she said.

Iman explained that the confrontation arose after prolonged provocation, and despite initially trying to exercise restraint, the situation spiraled out of control. She, however, emphasized that no level of provocation could justify the breakdown in decorum.

“Violence, in any form, has no place in our democracy,” she stated, adding that her actions undermined the integrity of the institution and the trust placed in her by the Kenyan people.

Taking full responsibility, Iman extended her sincere apologies to her colleagues, the public, and those who witnessed the scuffle. She admitted that the altercation had cast a shadow over Parliament’s duty to uphold dignity and mutual respect.

“I failed to embody the composure and maturity expected of an elected leader, and for that, I am truly sorry,” she said.

Iman further assured that the issue was being handled through proper channels and that she was committed to engaging constructively in its resolution.

In the widely shared video, the two MPs are seen exchanging heated words before the situation turns physical. Other female MPs attempt to intervene, but their efforts prove futile. One MP is heard calling for additional help, while another urges her colleagues to stop recording the incident. The situation is eventually brought under control by the Sergeant-at-arms.

In a separate statement, MP Ummul Kheir also expressed regret over the confrontation.

“Today, an unfortunate incident occurred on parliamentary grounds—a situation I deeply regret both as a Member of Parliament and as a mother,” she said.

Ummul Kheir confirmed that she had lodged a complaint with the relevant authorities, reaffirming her commitment to uphold the standards of conduct expected within Parliament.

“While I will not comment further at this time, I remain fully committed to maintaining the dignity and decorum expected of this institution and of myself, particularly as a Muslim woman.”
